Network Appliance and Veritas announce joint marketing and sales arrangement to deliver high-performance local NetApp data server backups

Veritas announces support of the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) standard with its award-winning NetBackup storage solution

January 29, 1998 - Mountain View and Santa Clara, CA -- Veritas Software Corporation (Nasdaq: VRTS), the leading provider of end-to-end storage management software, and Network Appliance, Inc. (Nasdaq: NTAP), the leading provider of dedicated, data-access appliances, today announce a joint marketing and sales arrangement in which the partners will co-market Veritas NetBackup and NetApp data servers, enabling high-performance local backups of enterprise data. Veritas has selected NDMP as the protocol of choice for localized backup of network attached storage servers.

"The combination of NetBackup and NetApp data servers will provide scaleable, extensible, high-performance backups of enterprise data," said Charlie Simmons vice president of marketing for Network Appliance. "Veritasí support of the NDMP standard provides a technical foundation for future storage and data management solutions that meet the needs of our joint customers."

Veritas supports the NDMP standard through an extension of NetBackup, allowing remote management of the NDMP client that resides on the NetApp data server. This combination of technologies enables high-speed backup of data to locally-attached peripheral devices, improving performance. Localizing backup operations avoids network saturation, especially in NetApp environments where a single data server may contain hundreds of gigabytes of data. NetBackup also leverages NetAppís "hot" backup capabilities to provide on-line backups of data and ensure 7 x 24 system availability. The combination of NetApp data servers, NDMP and NetBackup provide simple, centralized administration and backup of large-scale, UNIX and Windows NT environments.

"Veritas and Network Appliance share a customer base in the Global 2000. Our joint customers have asked for tighter integration between NetBackup and NetApp data servers. Our partnership provides a foundation for jointly meeting these customer needs," said Paul Sallaberry, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Veritas. "NetBackupís centralized management capabilities and NetAppís data server provide a simple, scaleable and performant solution for enterprise UNIX and Windows NT customers."

About NetBackup
Veritas NetBackup provides centralized management of backup and recovery for thousands of nodes across local and distributed servers from a single management console. NetBackup provides the industry's fastest, most scalable, high-performance networked backup solution-- bringing critical, mainframe-class data and storage management capabilities to UNIX and Windows NT platforms. Windows NT, Novell and Macintosh clients mean you can also incorporate desktop PCs into your enterprise backup strategy.

Veritas NetBackup is the only enterprise backup solution with single console management capability. This feature frees administrators from the painstaking task of logging into each node and managing it separately. With NetBackup, administrators can set universal backup and configuration policies that are automatically applied to each server and controlled from one console. NetBackup easily adds and configures new servers and manages local and remote distributed servers simultaneously.
