Network Appliance and Syncsort Inc. Announce Backup Express NDMP Support for High-Speed Backup and Restore of NetApp FilersSunnyvale, CA - June 6, 2000 -- Network Appliance Inc., (NASDAQ: NTAP), the leading provider of network-attached data access and content management, and Syncsort Inc., the developer of Backup Express, the leading high-speed enterprise backup and restore solution for UNIX®, Windows NT®/2000 and NetWare, today announced Backup Express support for Network Appliance filers. Backup Express 2.1.2 now supports tape drives and robotic tape libraries that are directly attached to NetApp filers as well as filer-to-filer "three-way" backup.Backup Express utilizes the industry-standard Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP) to transfer data from a Network Appliance filer to locally attached tape devices. Because Network Appliance filers can scale from hundreds of gigabytes to multiple terabytes of data, the need for high-speed local backup and restore is critical. Backup Express supports NDMP on a variety of hosts including all major UNIX platforms and Windows NT/2000 and is compatible with all leading tape libraries. "Supporting local tape devices on Network Appliance filers is a strategic extension of our distributed architecture," says Vic Werner, director of marketing at Syncsort. "Backup Express was architected to support tape devices on UNIX, Windows, and NetWare platforms while maintaining a single, central catalog for the entire enterprise. Adding tape support for Network Appliance filers is a high-impact but natural enhancement consistent with our overall product design." "The combination of Network Appliance filers and Syncsort Backup Express has been great," says Dan Abushanab, director of IT at Applix, Inc. in Westboro, Massachusetts. "The key thing we like about Backup Express is that we have the one console where we can see everything going on related to backup, including our NetApp filer, and our UNIX and NT servers," continues Abushanab. "Backup Express simplifies how we do our backups, and we don't have to worry about our data we know it's safe." Backup Express supports a variety of configurations with Network Appliance filers, including "three-way" backup, where the backup of a filer takes place over the network to a tape device attached to another filer. Tape library multi-hosting is supported as well, with NetApp filers and/or UNIX, NT, and NetWare servers sharing local drives within a multi-drive tape library. Also new in Backup Express 2.1.2 is the SAN Resource Sharing (SRS) option, which can be leveraged with Network Appliance filers. Backup Express SRS allows individual tape drives (standalone or in a robotic library) to be shared dynamically among multiple Backup Express Device Servers (UNIX, NT, NetWare, and NetApp.) The shared drives are automatically allocated and de-allocated as backup and restore operations demand. When multiple NetApp filers and UNIX, NT, and NetWare servers are attached to a SAN, Backup Express provides unprecedented flexibility to protect and support large amounts of data. "The combination of Network Appliance's industry-leading storage solutions and Backup Express, with its diverse platform and online database support, provides an excellent enterprise data-management strategy," said Michael Marchi, senior director of marketing at Network Appliance. "Data on NetApp filers can be shared between UNIX and Windows NT/2000 operating systems while Backup Express provides a high-speed backup and restore solution managed from a single UNIX or Windows NT/2000 host."
