Joining the NDMP Initiative

NDMP is an open data management protocol simplifying your development efforts and enabling you to offer your customers a wide breadth of data management solutions. NDMP is important to your business and we would like, with your support, to promote its success.

NDMP Initiative Update

In 1996, Intelliguard (now Legato) and Network Appliance (NetApp) defined a new and innovative protocol for network-based backups. The protocol was the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP). Over the years, this protocol is being enhanced and adopted by the backup and NAS community. With more than 400 copies of the Software Developer Kit (SDK) already downloaded from the NDMP.org web site, NDMP is clearly one of the leading open data management protocols in the industry.

In March 2000, the first NDMP interoperability testing event was held at the Connectathon in San Jose, CA. Twelve backup software and NAS vendors spent a week to do NDMP interoperability testing. In addition, 50 engineers from 20 different companies gathered to provide input on the next version of NDMP that was proposed. With this kind of support and participation, NDMP is ready to gain further momentum as the data management protocol of choice.

In April 2000, a new work group for NDMP was formed as part of SNIA. The new group will be responsible for the development of the protocol standard, interoperability testing, and educational programs for NDMP. The formation of the work group within SNIA will encourage wider adoption and help further the development of storage networking standards.

In May 2000, Quantum|ATL, a leading tape library vendor, announced their support for NDMP and their plans for embedding NDMP in their network-attached tape library. The adoption of NDMP by a tape library vendor further expands the application of this protocol to the removable media market.
