NDMP Version 5 (future development)

In early 2000 the NDMP workgroup identified a number of significant new functional requirements for NDMP that were originally targeted for the v4 protocol specification. Later in the year the workgroup made a decision to defer significant new functional development in favor of producing a revised protocol specification which eliminated imprecise language, ambiguity, and improved functional definition. These became the goals of the current NDMP v4 Internet Draft effort.

The functional requirements that were defined in early 2000 are still valid and will be revisited (as NDMP v5) once NDMP v4 specification effort is complete and v4 implementations are deployed. The documents archived on this page represent what will be the starting point for NDMP v5.

1) The NDMP v5 Backgrounder is a "living document" intended to collect the work group's current thoughts on NDMP v4. It also provides an orientation for newcomers to the NDMP v5 definition effort. 2) The NDMP v5 TOC (table of contents) proposes a high level outline of topics to be addressed by the NDMP v5 specification. Refining the TOC and developing the supporting specification content will be a primary focus of early NDMP work group activity. 3) The NDMP v5 Draft Specification - This is an active work in progress. Please direct comments and feedback to ndmp-tech@ndmp.org. 4) Checkpoints in NDMP is another backgrounder document representing the workgroup's current thoughts on backup/restore restartability and Direct Access Restore (DAR). 5) Wish List of features deferred beyond NDMP v4
